We explored how the modern zodiac with its 12 animals came about, tracing the history of astrology back to its ancient origins. Prior to the 12 animals cycling through 12 years, the zodiac centered on 12 astrological signs. Now we start exploring these astrological signs with Virgo. In observing the constellation Virgo we see a paradox, one that has always been there.
Virgo is a young virgin woman. So here is a photo of the stars forming Virgo. But it is impossible to ‘see’ Virgo (this virgin woman) in the stars. The stars themselves do not naturally form the image of the woman.
Even if we connect the stars in the Virgo constellation as in this Wikipedia image, it is still hard to ‘see’ any woman. And how does this constellation depict a ‘virgin’ woman?
But this has been the sign for as far back as records exist. Virgo is often shown in full detail, but the details do not come from the constellation itself.
Virgo in the Ancient Egyptian Dendera Zodiac
Below is the entire Zodiac in the ancient Egyptian Temple in Dendera. This zodiac contains the 12 Zodiac signs. Virgo circled in red. The sketch on the right shows the zodiac images more clearly. You see that Virgo holds a seed of grain. This seed of grain is the star Spica, the brightest star in the Virgo constellation. This star is the companion to the star Arcturus of the Bootes or Sheti 摄提; 攝提 constellation.
Here is Spica in a night sky photo, with the Virgo stars connected by lines.
Spica in Chinese Astrology
Spica has special status in Chinese astrology. We saw that the Asian zodiac focuses on 12 animals cycling through 12 years. But ancient Chinese astronomy also used Twenty-eight constellations (called Mansions) to reflect the movement of the Moon around the earth against the fixed background of stars.
Ancient Chinese astronomers divided the sky into four quarters, known as the Four Symbols, each with a mysterious animal. They are Azure Dragon (青龍) on the east, Black Tortoise (玄武) on the north, White Tiger (白虎) on the west, and Vermilion Bird (朱雀) on the south. Each region then contains seven mansions or constellations, making a total of 28 mansions.
Spica 角 (Jiǎo), is the first of these 28 mansions. So from Virgo it heads the list of mansions. Among the ancient Chinese, it was a horn symbolizing power and authority. For the ancient Greeks Spica symbolized a seed of grain. The power and authority of the Seed seen in its Chinese name is pictured in Taurus – the Bull with prominent horns.
Mystery of the Virgin Woman in Virgo
How did the ancients know that Virgo symbolized a virgin woman? It is not apparent in the constellation itself. This is the paradox of Virgo: The image is not innate within the constellation. And how could Spica symbolize a horn to the ancient Chinese while a seed of grain to the ancient Greeks?
This means that Virgo – the Virgin Woman – was not created from the stars themselves. Rather, the Virgin was thought of beforehand and then was placed onto the constellation. And Spica had a dual meaning both of horn/power and seed/life. So where did Virgo with Spica come from? Who first had the Virgin in mind and then placed her and Spica as Virgo in the stars?
Horoscope & Zodiac from Creator Himself
Job states that the zodiac constellations were ‘signs’ made by God from the beginning of time. Long before books recorded prophetic messages, they were placed in the stars as images to tell the story of God’s plan. The original zodiac was not to guide us to wealth, love and good fortune depending on the time and place of our birth. The zodiac was a visual story to reveal God’s plan, like a graphic novel today.
This story written in the stars from the beginning of history extends an invitation to you. It invites you to participate in this cosmic plan of the Creator. But before we can participate in this Story we must understand it. We saw here from the ancient Egyptians that the story began with Virgo. The preeminence of Spica in the 28 Mansions agrees with this.
So let us explore the Zodiac story beginning with Virgo. We see how it tells the same story as the ancient Hebrew records from their very beginning.
Virgo Story from Beginning
In paradise, after their creation in the image of God, Adam & Eve disobeyed their Creator. So the Creator confronted them and the serpent (Satan). He promised Satan that:
And I will put enmity
Genesis 3:15
between you and the woman,
and between your offspring and hers;
he will crush your head,
and you will strike his heel.”
We explore this riddle more thoroughly here, but notice that God promised that an ‘offspring’ (literally a ‘seed’) will come from a woman. But he does not mention any union with a man – thus she is a Virgin. This Seed of the Virgin would crush the ‘head’ of the serpent. The only person where even a claim exists of being born of a virgin woman is Jesus of Nazareth. The coming of the Christ from a Virgin was announced at the beginning of time, remembered both in the Chinese script, in the zodiac image of Virgo, and also in the records of the ancient Hebrews.
The immediate children of that first Man, to remember the Creator’s promise, created Virgo and placed her image in the constellation so that their descendants would remember the promise. Spica was remembered both as a Seed and a Horn as the offspring of the Woman would fulfill both symbolic meanings.
Thus the Plan of God, given as 12 pictures, remembered in the constellations of the Zodiac, was studied, told and retold in the centuries after Adam. After the flood, mankind corrupted the original story and it became the horoscope as used today.
Jesus and your Virgo Horoscope
The Virgo Horoscope was marked by Jesus when he said:
24 Very truly I tell you, unless a kernel of wheat falls to the ground and dies, it remains only a single seed. But if it dies, it produces many seeds. 25 Anyone who loves their life will lose it, while anyone who hates their life in this world will keep it for eternal life.
John 12:24-25
Jesus declared himself as that seed – Spica – which would achieve a great victory for us – the ‘many seeds’. This ‘seed’ of the Virgin had come at a specific ‘hour’ = ‘horo’. He did not come at any hour but at ‘the’ hour. He said this so we could mark (skopus) that hour and follow the story – read the horoscope he set out.
So the twelve Signs of the zodiac are for all peoples. There is not just one horoscope sign for you based on your birth date. The 12 Signs form a complete story to guide your life, if you choose to follow it, to eternal life through a lasting relationship with the Zodiac’s Creator.
Your Daily Virgo Horoscope Reading of the Ancient Zodiac
The Bible sets forth auspicious hours and time periods, invite us to note them, and live accordingly. Since horoscope = horo (hour) + skopus (mark to observe) we can do that with the zodiac using the written record to explain the Zodiac constellations more fully. Jesus himself marked the Virgo + Spica ‘hour’ for us. We can apply the horoscope reading today with the following:
Be careful not to miss that ‘hour’ declared by Jesus because you are too busy every day chasing unimportant things. Because of that, many will miss out on becoming the ‘many seeds’. Life is full of mysteries, but the key to eternal life and true wealth is to unlock the mystery of the ‘many seeds’ for yourself. Ask the Creator daily to guide you to understanding. Since He put the Sign in the Stars of Virgo as well as in His written record, he will give you insight if you ask, knock and seek for it. In a manner, the Virgo characteristics compatible for this are curiosity and an eagerness to dig for answers. If these traits mark you then put it into action by seeking further insight into Virgo.
